ASTM –
American Society for testing and materials. A voluntary
organization concerned with development of consensus standards,
testing procedures, and product specifications.
UL Label – Label displayed
on packaging to indicate the level of fire and/or wind resistance
of asphalt roofing and whether shingles meet certain ASTM standards.
For example, "class A" is the highest fire resistance
rating for roofing as per ASTM E.108.
Deck – The surface installed
over supporting framing members (rafters or trusses) to which
roofing is applied.
Eaves – The horizontal lower
edge of a sloped roof.
Felt – Organic fiber mat
or fiberglass impregnated with asphalt and used an underlayment
between deck and roofing material also used to keep house watertight
until shingles are applied.
Ice Dam – Condition formed
by the thawing and re-freezing of melted snow especially at
lower roof edge on the roof overhang and gutters. This can cause
water to pond and flow up under shingles causing leaks.
Laminated Shingles – Strip
shingles containing more than one layer of tabs to create extra
thickness; also referred to as dimensional shingles or architectural
shingles.
Strip Shingles – Asphalt
shingles that are approximately three times long as they are
wide;
also known as 3-n-1’s.
Slope – The degree of roof
incline experienced as the ratio of the rise in inches, to the
run, inches (or feet). Sometimes expressed as "pitch"
in degrees of an angle.
Vent – Any device installed
on the roof, gable, or soffit for the purpose of ventilating
the underside of the roof deck or attic space.
Lead flashing or Vent Flashing – Actual lead material
or an aluminum flange with a neoprene collar installed over
plumbing system vent pipes at the point they protrude through
the roof.
Tear-off – A roofing project
which involves removing all existing roofing down to the roof
deck after which a new roof system is installed. This is usually
required where 2 or more layers currently exist.
Waterproofing shingle underlayment
– A special self-adhering waterproofing shingle underlayment
designed to protect against water infiltration due to ice dams
or wind driven rain.
Reroof – Applying a new
roof directly over the existing roof, usually done where only
one layer now exists, but local codes can vary on the specific
requirements.
